What to Avoid whenever You’re Applying (or how exactly to overcome your senior autumn)

What to Avoid whenever You’re Applying (or how exactly to overcome your senior autumn)

Enough time had come. My bachelor’s degree had been newly in hand, and I decided to accept the job that is first was being offered ( it had been the Great Recession and driving a car of unemployment was very real). Thankfully, working with senior high school seniors as they navigated the college application process turned out to become a great fit for me! I learned many things working at a high school (do you realize there’s an app that calculates the likelihood you will get yourself a snow day?!), and each fall was a class in just how difficult it’s to become a 12th grader.

Senior 12 months is tough! You are in your most difficult classes to date, you’re dealing with more and more obligations, you’re hitting a milestone virtually every week…and then we ask you to college. 12th grade may never be simple, however you can simply make it less hard. Though each student’s college procedure is unique, you will find a number of behaviors/mind sets that I have seen cause stress that is unnecessary and time again. Some call them the Four Horseman of the Appocalypse that is common by some after all me personally), but they have been all avoidable knowing how exactly to recognize the signs!

Focusing too much on everything you can’t change.

Can you keep fretting about that C you got in freshman English? Are you regretting your choice to quit the track team? Many students invest their fall that is senior focusing the past, and it drains their time and energy like Snapchat drains my phone battery pack. As opposed to stressing about things you cannot change, take your time writing a well thought out essay, striving for great senior year grades, and putting together the application that is best you can. Think upward and forward!

Ignoring the advice of your elders.

Do you nod whenever your therapist speaks then instantly wipe the conversation from your memory? Do you reject your parents’ guidance like it is your work? I am shocked…really, I’m. Keep in head that, with it,’ the adults in your life can offer important insight into your application process (and even help you identify your strengths so you can better highlight them) while they might not always be ‘hip and. Ignoring their advice can cut you off from some pretty valuable information, so have you thought to take all of the help you can get?

Dropping in love.

No, I’m not speaing frankly about the lab partner you’ve had a crush on for years (them already) though you should really just tell! I am speaing frankly about the head-over-heels students that are feeling get for one college on their list. There’s a huge difference between having a choice that is first being so fixated for a school that you can not even fathom going somewhere else. It is called the college process for a reason—no one knows exactly how it shall end! Though I sincerely hope you’re admitted to your top choice (and obviously I wish your top choice is USC), I strongly encourage you to keep an open mind in order to find a number of institutions you would love to go to.

Are you currently making things to your last minute? Are you currently putting down searching for what supplementary essays you need to write? Are you currently reading this post on January 14th? You are procrastinating! Despite what you may tell your self, no one works most useful under stress (trust me…this is a ‘do as I state, not as I do’ situation). Numerous drafts would be the key to a good essay, and making significant progress before the eleventh hour is the sole defense against an application that is sloppy. You have enough on your plate year that is senior. If you do not have an idea yet for how you are going to complete each of your essays, supplements, applications, etc. make one! That you don’t want to rush (or even worse, forget something) in this process. So stop looking over this blog and get to work—I know you can perform it!

Student Highlight: USC Student Body President, Edwin Saucedo

Hey All,

It’s Natalie Guevara and I also’m excited to take effect with our web log. While discovering subject ideas, I considered common questions we have from potential pupils and one of my favorites is definitely: just what’s it like to be described as a pupil at USC? And although I’m an alumna of the university and had personal great experiences…I really want you to listen to from current pupils with a bigger range of majors/involvement/background/etc. So rather than hear about all the cool things I need to say (many of you get an adequate amount of that), I’ll https://shmoop.pro/1984-by-george-orwell-main-characters/ find current students to let you know about their experiences. For our first installment, we’ve Edwin Saucedo, the Student Body President for the Undergraduate Student Government. He’s originally from South Gate, CA and is set to graduate this coming May 2017. Some tips about what he previously to say:

Four years ago, I found myself where many of perhaps you are right now: frustrated with my personal statement and tired of searching for the perfect college. It absolutely was hard enough trying to navigate college applications when neither of my parents spoke English or had pursued degree themselves. The stress of finding the best place to pay the following four years was extremely overwhelming.

Than I could have ever expected as I think back at my college application process the first thing I have to say is, everything worked out better. I never thought I would end up at USC when I applied to college. I grew up in South Gate, CA where only 6% of the total population pursues a college degree. It goes without saying, We never imagined i might find myself being the pupil Body President my year that is senior here. The four years in between my senior year of high school and senior year of university have induced a wide range of lessons, experiences, and friendships I never expected. However, the combination of most these unexpected life outcomes has indeed led me to where I am today.

Being pupil Body President at one of the more prestigious universities into the country can be an job that is intimidating. It’s not easy trying to express nearly 19,000 students who come from over 100 different countries, are of all different races, and have really diverse backgrounds that are economic. However, it’s also an extremely opportunity that is rewarding. Every i get to go into our student government office and ask myself: how can I make this university a better place for all students day? That is our objective in student government, to create the best undergraduate experience, and that is why I made the decision to run for this position last springtime.

I spend at the least twenty hours every week listening to pupils’ experiences, asking them how I really could be of any service, and connecting them to your channels that are proper this campus. On one other side of things, I advocate on the behalf to administration in efforts generate better campus policies, address any issues, and plan for the future of our campus. My favorite part however is taking the knowledge I discovered from both students and administrators and picking out unique solutions to addressing these dilemmas.

In student government we pride ourselves in being innovators and thinkers that are creative. We challenge each other’s ideas and provides suggestions on improvements. At the end of the we come up with proposals on how to address each and every issue day. It is through these imaginative proposals that we have been able to get our students uber that is free from 7pm to 2 am and have gotten a weekly farmers market on campus. But our work doesn’t end there. Over the course of the 12 months our pupil government sets on over 300 free events for our pupils. These range from intimate discussions about our education system to bringing speakers like Laverne Cox or performers like Diplo for our students to enjoy.

We shape the experience that is undergraduate give students the opportunity to explore perspectives beyond their own; because that is what college is all about. Irrespective of whether you go to USC or select elsewhere as your home, dare to challenge your self and be challenged by other people. As President I always encounter students perspectives that differ from my own, they’re not right or wrong but different, and that is okay.

You will end up, but instead what you will do once you get there as you approach the last months of the college application process don’t worry as much about where. College is a right time and energy to explore and find your passion. I discovered my passion within student government and working towards increasing USC for present and students that are future. For you, that passion might lie in another activity. Regardless, enjoy your final months of high school and get prepared to embark in a journey that is new of unique and exciting experiences. Best of luck on applying to university and should anyone ever get disillusioned, remember that why is Trojans strong is that we always Fight in!
